Hide Wind

              Jululu

First conceived in Summer of 2001, the album Hide Wind chronicles an evolution of an artist, Jim Phelps, through a four-year period of change. "Jululu" similarly reflects a multi-personality by absorbing diverse artists/attitudes into one entity. Regarding  this period of time Phelps remarks:

"My own product has always been very diverse, as has been the case with the collective output of my students at Northern Illinois University.  It follows, then, that I grew more and more weary of the 'sameness' and 'jumping on the bandwagon syndrome' I witnessed during a long period of time during which I was participating in many festivals and conferences in various venues and countries. I began to find an escape hatch through the Jululu concept which is not altogether different from Lennon's Plastic Ono Band. A powerful vehicle ... even propellent ... for this escape was found within my relationship with a Chinese singer and pianist, Ms. Luo Ting-yi, whom I met in November of 2000 in Chengdu, China.  Within her I found an astonishing 'westermism' (she spoke English with an American accent at the age of 19!) interpreted through Chinese culture creating a unique amalgam of perspective.  Listening to her music was viewing the familiar as if reflected back via funhouse mirrors.  This fit perfectly."

An artistic relationship predating Jululu by several years is that between visual artist/composer/performer Bart Woodstrup and Jim Phelps.  They have teamed up for various collaborations including musical works, art works and efforts combining the disciplines.  One such piece is a DVD version of Phelps' "RickLicks" combining digital images created by Woodstrup and digital music composed and performed by Phelps.  This piece was featured during a month-long exhibit in a Chicago art gallery in the Fall of 2004.  Woodstrup also produced the art work for Phelps' earlier CD ATALLMIRROR, still available from www.emf.org.

"I have always considered our work together to be 50/50 visual and sonic, whether we're producing a live performance or a recorded work, such as Hide Wind. I consider the art concept as integral to the whole package."  -jp
The art work for Hide Wind was created by Woodstrup and comprises an infused vision of Jululu and the original concept of Hide Wind.
Although the original concept for Hide Wind was to present only "Jululu" music, the current and final incarnation includes the last "conference" pieces of Phelps (e.g., "Thirty Comfortable Days", 2000) and traces movement toward and into Jululu ("RickLicks", 2003 and "Preppie Chinese", 2004).  Phelps will soon be traveling to Shanghai to continue work on the next Jululu CD, Soup On Fire.
